A grocery chain most Americans outside the Southeast barely think about is opening 10 new stores in 2026.
And no, it isn't Walmart.
Food Lion started the year with four new stores. Now it is adding six more across North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, taking its 2026 total to 10. The next one opens September 23, 2026, in Summerfield, North Carolina. Then Charlotte on October 7, Lavonia, Georgia on October 14, Greenville and Hilton Head in South Carolina, and Wren in December.
That doesn't sound crazy until you look backward.
Food Lion opened only one net new store in fiscal 2025 and one in fiscal 2024. Now it is suddenly stepping on the gas.
So what changed?
