Every business in America is under attack.
Not dramatically. Quietly, constantly, by anyone who notices it is making money and thinks they could do the same thing cheaper.
That is how competition is supposed to work. Somebody earns good profits, others pile in, prices fall, and the profits get competed away.
So the interesting question is not how a company gets successful. It is how a company stays successful for thirty years while everyone tries to take it.
The answer is a moat. And the best ones are not the ones people talk about.

The famous moats are patents and brands. The durable moats are stranger, smaller, and almost completely invisible from outside.
Once you can see them, business makes a great deal more sense. So does your own position in the world.
