The movie theater business has been getting eulogized for about twenty five years.

First it was DVDs. Then Netflix by mail. Then streaming. Then the pandemic, which emptied every auditorium in America overnight and trained a generation to watch new releases on a couch.

Attendance never came back to where it was. That is not pessimism, it is just the number.

So an Arizona chain did something that sounds slightly unhinged in that context.

It built a theater where the seats move, the air blows, scents get released, and water sprays at you during the appropriate scenes.

Arizona's first 4D auditorium, opened in 2026.

You can call that a gimmick. Plenty of people will.

But it is a perfectly rational response to a question that every theater in America has to answer, and most of them are answering badly.

The question is not how do we compete with streaming.
