It is heavy, which makes it miserable to carry and expensive to stock.

It is completely standardized, so the same bag is available from a dozen sellers at comparable prices.

It is bought on a schedule, which means the customer knows exactly what they want and needs no help choosing.

And it is the definition of a product that should be delivered. Heavy, repeating, predictable.

Which is why online subscription services attacked the category hard and took a substantial share of it.

And yet there is a chain from Memphis that kept opening stores throughout that period, because it figured out that the bag was never the business.
