Walk into a supermarket in the middle of the country and count what is inside.

A pharmacy. A health clinic. A dietitian with an office. A sit-down restaurant. A coffee bar. A florist. Sometimes a gym. Occasionally a wine bar, which is a strange thing to find next to the cereal aisle.

It looks like a company that could not decide what it wanted to be.

It is the opposite. This is one of the sharpest strategic responses to a genuine crisis in American grocery, and the crisis is real.

Here is the problem in one sentence. Selling food makes almost no money, and the part of it that did make money is being taken away.

So a chain that wants to survive the next twenty years has to become something other than a place that sells food.

What it is becoming is a health company with a grocery store attached. Let me show you why that is not as strange as it sounds.
