Somewhere in North Carolina, grocery store employees are doing a dance in the chicken department.
Not as a one-time stunt. On a schedule. It is a thing the store does, and people know about it.
There is also a beer bar near the produce. A popcorn station. A sausage counter where somebody is actually making sausage. Departments with names that sound like small shops rather than aisles.
Your first reaction is probably that this is ridiculous.
Your second reaction, if you know anything about grocery margins, should be that ridiculous is expensive and somebody approved it anyway.
So why would a chain spend real money making a supermarket entertaining?
Because it is one of the few remaining answers to a problem that is coming for every grocery store in America, and the problem is that people have stopped wanting to walk through the building at all.
