Sunday is a big day for furniture.

People are off work. Couples shop together. Nobody buys a sofa alone on a Tuesday afternoon.

So a furniture chain that closes every Sunday is voluntarily giving up one of its two best days of the week.

That chain exists, in Utah, and it has done this since it was a small shop selling appliances out of a truck.

Here is where it gets interesting. Berkshire Hathaway bought the company, and Warren Buffett, who is not especially known for sentimentality about revenue, told them to keep the policy.

Later, when the chain expanded into a new state and tried opening on Sundays there to test the market, the results were bad enough that they closed again.

Which suggests something more than tradition was operating.
