You look at it for about two seconds. Then it goes in a pocket, a bag, a car door, or straight into the bin by the exit that exists specifically because nobody wants the thing they were just given.

A paper receipt.

It is 2026. Your phone knows your heart rate. Your car updates itself overnight. And a store still hands you a strip of paper with a picture of a barcode on it.

Here is what makes it interesting.

The receipt has survived every single technology that should have killed it.

Email. Smartphones. Loyalty apps. Digital wallets. Cloud point of sale systems. Every one of them arrived, everyone predicted the end of paper, and the paper is still there.

So either the entire retail industry is being stubborn for no reason, or the receipt is doing jobs that nobody bothered to list.
